Marilyn Manson (* 5. January 1969 in Canton , Ohio , as Brian Hugh Warner ) is an American musician , artist , singer , actor of the same name and co-founder rock band Marilyn Manson .

biography

Brian Hugh Warner was born to Barbara (deceased May 2014) and Hugh Warner (deceased July 8, 2017) in Canton, Ohio. His father had served as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War and later worked as a furniture salesman, his mother as a nurse. He attended the Heritage Christian School, a strictly Christian private school , later a public school . According to Manson's official autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell , this period was very formative for him and influenced his religious and political views considerably. The term “ anti-Christian ” appeared frequently in his school days and is particularly common in his later years as a musician. Manson developed a predilection for hard rock early on, collecting posters, owning drinking bottles and other items from his favorite band KISS . Pictures show the young Manson in make-up as Peter Criss .

At school he earned extra money by illegally trading in sound carriers and sweets. A series of events led the young Warner to develop grudges against his strictly religious school and in the end did many things to provoke the school administration and be suspended from the school. According to his own account, he found it early on to attract attention and to imprint himself in people's minds.

After moving to Fort Lauderdale , Florida with his parents , he attended Broward Community College to study journalism and theater . Before founding the band Marilyn Manson, whose original name was Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids, he wrote poetry and short stories and was a music journalist for 25th Parallel magazine. As a reporter, he interviewed several bands, including his idols from KISS. He himself said that some of these interviews were very disappointing for him as he realized how unreal a lot was in the music business.

1994 appeared with Portrait of an American Family, the debut album under the band name Marilyn Manson . In the same year, Warner was made an honorary member of the Church of Satan by Anton Szandor LaVey .

During the recording of the album "Mechanical Animals" (1998) Marilyn Manson began to paint and to present his pictures in exhibitions. Warner starred in the 1997 David Lynch film Lost Highway , 1999 in The Sugar Sweet Death , 2003 in Party Monster , 2004 in The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things , 2005 Living in Neon Dreams and 2006 in Rise . In 2002 he was also seen in Michael Moore's documentary Bowling for Columbine . Other film and television roles followed. In 2010 Marilyn Manson exhibited his watercolors in the “project space” of the Kunsthalle Wien . In 2014/2015 the exhibition “Autopsy: Working on Thin Paper” followed in the Flatz Museum in Dornbirn . A central work here is Manson's portrait of Elizabeth Short , who was cruelly murdered in Los Angeles in 1947 and who, as “Black Dahlia”, has inspired several crime novel writers and film directors.

Marilyn Manson was engaged to Rose McGowan from 1998 to 2001 . On December 3, 2005, Warner married his long-time girlfriend Dita Von Teese on the Irish estate of Gottfried Helnwein , but Von Teese filed for divorce on December 29, 2006. After that, Warner was dating actress Evan Rachel Wood . The couple initially separated in November 2008 and finally in August 2010.

In April 2001, Jennifer Syme, then girlfriend of Keanu Reeves , was killed in a car accident after a party at Marilyn Manson's. A year later, on April 2, 2002, her mother filed a lawsuit against Marilyn Manson in Los Angeles. The musician supplied her with drugs and then let her drive her car, so the allegation. In an initial statement, Manson dismissed the lawsuit as unfounded. His lawyers prepared a counterclaim for defamation. Manson commented on the allegations through his label Posthuman Records: “After Jennifer was brought home safely by a selected driver, she later got behind the wheel of her car for reasons only known to her. Her death is sad and tragic. ”However, he is not responsible for it. The police found drugs and medication in the car of the deceased. According to the authorities, a possible impairment of the ability to drive was expressly pointed out in the package leaflets of the medicines. High levels of cocaine were also found in Seme's blood. In addition, the young woman was not buckled up on the way back to Manson's party.

In 2007 Warner launched an absinthe in cooperation with the Matter-Luginbühl AG distillery in Switzerland , in whose development he played a key role and which he named Mansinthe. At the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a worldwide competition for schnapps and liqueurs, this absinthe won a gold medal in 2008.

From 2008 Warner planned the shooting of the film Phantasmagoria , in which he was to act as a director and leading actor. The film should be about the mathematician Lewis Carroll , best known for his book Alice in Wonderland . In 2015, Manson announced on the reddit.com platform that the unfinished film project was discontinued despite a trailer that had appeared.

At the end of 2014 Emigrate released a duet with Marilyn Manson entitled Hypothetical on the album Silent So Long . In October of the same year, Marilyn Manson released Third Day Of A Seven Day Binge as a free download, the first harbinger of the ninth studio album The Pale Emperor . On December 16, 2014, the album's official lead single, Deep Six, was released . The Pale Emperor was released in January 2015, followed by The Hell Not Hallelujah Tour. In the following year, Manson played concerts regularly, including a co-headlining tour with Slipknot . In the summer of 2016, Marilyn Manson announced his tenth studio album SAY10 for Valentine's Day 2017 at the 2016 Alternative Press Music Awards ceremony (he himself won an "Icon Award") . The album was not released on February 14, 2017, and Manson did not comment specifically on the release of the album in the following weeks. It was finally released on October 6, 2017 with the name Heaven Upside Down .

Name origin

The stage name Marilyn Manson is a combination of the names of the actress Marilyn Monroe on the one hand and the criminal Charles Manson on the other hand. This is to illustrate the inseparable association of good and bad . Manson speaks of two "magic words" that reflected American culture and as such were already formative for his childhood.
