Silent So Long ( English for " so long silent ") is the second studio album of the band international project Emigrate to the Rammstein - lead guitarist Richard Kruspe . It was released on November 14, 2014 on the Vertigo and Universal Music labels .

General

In an interview with She Wolf , Kruspe, the head of the project, made it clear that he does not see the album as a solo album or a stage for experimental guitar solos:

“Emigrate is also a band. I didn't want to do a typical guitarist solo album either. To distinguish myself as a guitarist wasn't my aim at all. I'm not really that great guitarist like Joe Satriani and what do I know what they're all called. [...]. I am also not interested in playing fast and virtuoso in any way, I tend to concentrate more on all the other instruments that should appear in the arrangement. For me it is important what the respective song needs. And if he needs a good riff, I'll do it. But I don't necessarily start with the guitar and I don't have to have a guitar solo in every song. […] But, - I'm someone who has high demands on the guitar in terms of sound and this time I have played every song on the new album five times to get this sound right. So my claim is more towards the sound of the guitar and not towards virtuosity, because I just don't have that. "

- Richard Kruspe

In the same interview he gave a preview of a partially finished next album.

In many interviews, such as with the Kronen Zeitung , Kruspe remarked that the album was strongly influenced by its Berlin environment, unlike Emigrate , which was made in New York.

A video was released for the single Eat You Alive , filmed in Berlin under the direction of Zoran Bihaćs . In the video you can see Arnaud Giroux on rhythm guitar and Margaux Bossieaux on bass. Joe Letz can be seen as the drummer in the video, who also played in the video for My World , but cannot be heard on any of the band's songs.

The graphic design comes from Giroux. The photos for the album are from Klaus Merz.

Cover design

The album cover shows the band's logo, which is made of dark gray wood. Above it is the word Emigrate and below it the title Silent So Long in black. The background is light gray and stone-like.

Quotes about the songs

Eat You Alive

Richard Kruspe commented on the creation process: “Well, 'Eat You Alive' was actually by a song called Mein Teil , luck-wise a guy that ate the penis from each other for the other guy. We're trying to write a song about the guy about to get eaten. So there were the first inspiration about this song, it changes and became totally something else. When you write, you got one idea, it changes, the direction of the song, music wise, I don't even know honestly. "

Get down

Regarding Get Down , Kruspe commented: “I wanted to write a song for strip clubs with 'Get Down'. I always need a picture in my head when I'm writing a song. And with this one it was the striptease dancers on the pole. Arnaux suggested a female guest and mentioned Peaches. It turned out that she was in Berlin. Her first reaction: 'I don't care what you do. I just want to meet you. ' So we met up and spent an hour talking about raw food, healthy eating, smoothies and that sort of thing. And after a while I said, 'Ok, let's do a song.' "

Rock city

Arnaud Giroux commented on Lemmy Kilmister's guest contribution: “I compare his voice to Japanese calligraphy […] There is something very essential about it. There were no mistakes with him. The result was the purest, perfect imperfect song. He makes the song his own by simply being himself. "

In another interview he said: "Lemmy has so much respect from us, for doing this, being sick, and he did it anyway, that was for me, it was an amazing gesture."

Silent So Long

Kruspe also commented on the chaotic development phase of the title track: “Jonathan Davis, for example, doesn't even have a phone at home. [...]

But I really wanted to have him on the album. So I tried to get to Jonathan through a tour manager friend of mine. Fortunately, that worked out. He then let it be known that Jonathan was thrilled and would get in touch. But then nothing came for a long time. [...]

I then sang the song myself and was actually done with it. Then, weeks later, I was mixing in the studio when suddenly Jonathan answered and said he could get started now. So, all over again, the song went over the pond and I waited. When the result came back, I was totally happy. But there was a high note in the chorus that Jonathan couldn't quite get right. So what to do He said he couldn't sing that high. So I grabbed the phone and whispered the following in his ear: Watch out, Jonathan. This is the German way! You now take both of your hands, grab your balls and squeeze so hard until you get that damn sound. Half an hour later the song was done (laughs). "

Kruspe's singing skills, which have improved significantly since the last album, were generally positively received, but opinions differed considerably when it came to the inclusion of the guest singers.

  • Kai Butterweck wrote on laut.de : “Kruspe's second Emigrate trick is particularly convincing due to the impeccable performance of his guests. It is true that the tracks sung by Kruspe also encourage an appreciative nod - especially the hymn 'Faust', which throws down everything - but the actual cornerstones of the album are rather in strange front gardens. Richard Kruspe sits there, fussy, on the lawnmowers. In this respect: applause for everyone involved. "
  • Thomas Pilgrim wrote for plattentests.de : “Irrespective of their name, emigrants by no means wander between worlds, but mostly only from one to the other - albeit without any cross-border stylistic diversity. "Silent so long" is a rock-solid, robust, drum-hitting piece of alternative metal that repeatedly reaches into the socket with nimble fingers - but not much more either. "
  • Dominik Winter wrote for the Metal Hammer : “And if you have always wanted to know how electronically operated Motörhead or melodic Ministry could sound, you will get the answer in 'Rock City' from Lemmy himself. No question: emigrants are not allowed to remain silent for that long! "
