Rise: Blood Hunter is an American - New Zealand action thriller released in 2007 . Directed by Sebastian Gutierrez , who also wrote the script.
action
Sadie Blake is a reporter for LA Weekly magazine . She researches cults that are spread underground and is captured and killed by one of them. Shortly afterwards, she wakes up in a morgue and faces the reality that she has become a vampire herself . Separated from everything she knows, she quickly gives up and wants to take her own life. In this condition she is found by a Mexican who nurses her back to health and shows her how to take revenge. With the aim of bringing down her murderers, she begins to visit one cult member after the other. She meets the police investigator Clyde Rawlins, whose only daughter was killed by the vampires. Blake teams up with him to face the last cult member and leader, Bishop, and seek revenge. After it's done, Blake asks Rawlins to kill the last vampire as well - herself.
Depiction of vampires in the film
The term vampire is never mentioned in the film, nor is the "Condition" given a specific name. Rawlins speculates that Blake's changes are genetic, but this is not tested or proven in the film.
Unlike other films in the genre, the vampires in the film don't have any obvious superhuman abilities besides immortality and an increased healing rate. In addition, the vampires do not have changed teeth, but rely on blades or the like to get at the blood of their victims. This fact becomes apparent when Blake tries to drink blood for the first time after her death and seems very irritated when she bites her victim.
Reviews
Mark Palermo wrote in his review published on Rotten Tomatoes that the film was "mediocre" because it was not wild enough. Lucy Liu is wasted, which also applies to the supporting actors.
