The Fantasy Film Festival is an international genre - Film Festival .

General

The Fantasy Film Festival takes place in August and September in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Cologne and Nuremberg with a time lag. It presents the genre of the fantastic film . The main program Selected Features shows current genre and independent films from Europe and America. Other firmly established programs are Focus Asia (genre films of pan-Asian cinema), Midnight Madness (midnight screenings for extreme, bizarre trash, splatter and horror films) and Get Shorty ( short film program). Since 2006 there has been an audience award for films from the Fresh Blood competition series (debut or second films by directors). So far there have been retrospectives and homages to Dario Argento , David Cronenberg , Jess Franco , Peter Jackson , David Lynch , Jimmy Sangster , the Shaw Brothers , Wild Bunch and Brian Yuzna .

For some films, there are audience discussions and personal film introductions by invited directors, actors and producers. These usually take place in Berlin and Hamburg. All films are shown in the original version and, in the case of non-English language films, with English, sometimes even with German subtitles .

The Fantasy Filmfest is organized by Rosebud Entertainment with a core team of four employees.

history

The Fantasy Filmfest was founded in Hamburg in 1987. In the first year of the festival, film classics and premieres were shown in Alabama and the market hall . On Sunday there was a cinema brunch with Small Shop Full of Horrors by Roger Corman and Der kleine Horrorladen by Frank Oz .

In summer 2017, the festival took place in Munich , Hamburg , Stuttgart , Berlin , Frankfurt , Cologne and Nuremberg . From 2007 to 2014, 60 to 80 feature films were shown in parallel in several cities, from 2015 onwards, due to the change to singular presentation, only a good 50. The festival opened in Hamburg until 1992, and in Munich from 1993 to 2007. The festival has been opening in Berlin since 2008 (exception 2017: Munich).

Due to little visitor interest, the following cities were only used once or twice: Essen (1995), Esslingen instead of Stuttgart and Sulzbach instead of Frankfurt (1998), Bochum (2006/07), Leipzig (2007, only FFN), Dortmund (2008), Hanover (2010, only FFF).

Since 2003 there has also been the Fantasy Filmfest Nights in spring in all festival cities (2003 and 2004 under the name Die Nacht der 1000 Schreie ), a two-day mini edition of the festival. In 2017, the Fantasy Filmfest Nights made stops on weekends in April in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. In autumn 2007 the Focus Asia Nights took place once in selected festival cities , also a two-day event as a separate version of the Focus Asia festival program with eight current genre films from pan-Asian cinema. Since winter 2015/16, the Fantasy Filmfest White Nights has also been taking place in all cities of the main festival (until 2017 without Hamburg).

Fresh Blood Award

Since 2006, the audience prize Fresh Blood Award has been presented at the Fantasy Filmfest for the best first or second work.
