Blancanieves , long title Blancanieves - A fairy tale of black and white , is a Spanish-French fictional film by Pablo Berger from 2012. The silent film in black and white is based loosely on the fairy tale Snow White by the Brothers Grimm .

action

Seville on April 21, 1910: In the La Colosal arena, the spectators look forward to the performance of the famous bullfighter Antonio Villalta. Antonio's wife Carmen de Triana in particular, who is heavily pregnant, is excited and enthusiastic when Antonio shows his skills. When the death blows, a photographer wants to get the best picture and flashes the scene when Antonio tries to stab the bull. Antonio misses the bull and it attacks Antonio. The bullfighter is seriously injured and carried out of the arena; Carmen goes into labor. While Antonio is undergoing emergency surgery in the hospital, Carmen gives birth to a daughter next door, but dies shortly after the birth. Antonio survives, but is paralyzed in his arms and legs. He doesn't want to see his daughter. During his convalescence he was cared for by the nurse Encarna, who eventually married him. Carmen's daughter Carmencita grows up with her grandmother. When she dies during Carmencita's communion celebration, Carmencita finds accommodation in Antonio's house. She is not allowed to see her father, who lives on the forbidden second floor, on instructions from Encarnas. The strict stepmother also treats Carmencita like a maid. She has to do heavy labor, keep her hair short like a boy, and sleep in a stable.

One day Carmencita secretly reaches the second floor and sees her father again for the first time in a long time. He also recognizes his daughter. Both spend many hours together, while Encarna has fun with her lover Genaro Bilbao. She has long since lost interest in Antonio, whom she punishes and torments with contempt. Antonio teaches his daughter the skills of a torero. Years go by and Carmencita becomes a young woman. One day she learns that her father fell to his death in a wheelchair - it remains unspoken that Encarna pushed him into the depths. The next day, Encarna sends Carmencita away to pick flowers for her father's grave. Encarna's lover, Genaro Bilbao, tries to strangle Carmencita and later drowns her in a lake. This is where the short Rafita finds the young woman. He can revive her, but Carmencita has lost her memory. When she wakes up, she finds herself in the fair wagon of the six dwarfs Rafita, Jesusín, Josefa, Juanín, Manolín and Victorino, who travel through Spain as Les Enanitos Toreros and organize animal fights with calves. In such a fight, the star of the group, Jesusín, is thrown to the ground by a calf. While the others want to continue the fight because the audience is enthusiastic, Carmencita climbs into the arena and saves Jesusín by performing as a torero. In the following years Carmencita, who is called “Blancanieves” by the small stature, becomes the star of the group - much to the displeasure of Jesusín. As Les 7 Enanitos Toreros , the group tours the country and finally, around a year after Antonio Villalta's death, receives a contract through the windy agent Carlos Montoya for a performance in the Arena La Colosal in Seville. Carmencita, who has never learned to read, does not know that she has signed a lifelong contract for an exclusive collaboration.

Encarna is living with her lover in an expensive villa when she reads about the appearance of the ominous Blancanieves in the newspaper. She recognizes Carmencita in her, kills Genaro in anger and goes to the arena on the day of the bullfight. Here the jealous Jesusín exchanges the calf intended for the fight for a bull. Just before the fight, Antonio Villalta's former manager appears, who enthusiastically welcomes Blancanieves as Antonio's daughter Carmencita. While going to the arena to fight, she regains her memory. Emotionally overwhelmed, she can barely focus on the fight, but gathers at the crucial moment. The bullfight captivates the audience. During the Faena , the audience pardons the bull, which rarely happens with very brave and strong bulls. Then those present celebrate Carmencita for her achievement. Numerous presents are thrown into the arena. Encarna, however, gives Carmencita an apple that she has poisoned. Carmencita tastes the apple and collapses dead. Jesusín, who had already seen Encarna with the apple some time before, takes up the pursuit with the other small stature. Encarna is finally put behind the scenes in the box of the pardoned bull and killed by it. The lifeless Carmencita is carried out of the arena.

Some time later, Carlos Montoya's fairground booth announced the miraculous resurrection of the Blancanieves. For money, visitors can kiss the laid out Carmencita and hope to bring her to life with her kiss. Rafita watches the spectacle suffering every day, since he has never stopped loving Carmencita. After several unsuccessful kisses by the visitors, Carmencita suddenly wakes up after a kiss and straightens up. The viewer runs away in panic. It turns out that Carmencita only moved through a mechanical device in the stretcher. Sadly, Rafita restores the lifeless woman, combs her hair and puts on new make-up. He lies down next to her and kisses her carefully. As he begins to sleep, a tear slowly trickles from Carmencita's closed eyes.

production

Director Pablo Berger had already started work on Blancanieves in 2003 . He was working on the film's storyboard in 2011 when he found out about the premiere of The Artist just before filming began . Although the planned surprise element of a modern silent film was no longer there, Berger completed his second feature film. Blancanieves was shot in Seville, Barcelona, Madrid and the bullring in Aranjuez , among others . Paco Delgado created the costumes, Alain Bainée designed the film .

The film premiered on September 8, 2012 at the Toronto International Film Festival . It was released in German cinemas on November 28, 2013.

criticism

The film service called Blancanieves an "equally free to ludicrous film adaptation of the 'Snow White' material". The film pays tribute to the cinema of the early days and "captivates with its exuberant ingenuity." The Frankfurter Rundschau praised the film, which was better than The Artist . It is “the far more original film that, despite many quotations, is not like anyone that already exists.” With Blancanieves , the silent film “has returned to where the passage of time left it in 1929: as that art form, in reality and fantasy are only a stone's throw away and tragedy and comedy complement each other in a truly chaplinesque manner . ”The Berliner Zeitung gave a similar assessment and found that the film“ knows how to use the means of expression in silent film to perfection ”and“ offers the entire repertoire of historical narrative tricks ” . "Sunshine and Noir, the expressionism of Berlin, Paris and Hollywood, combine in 'Blancanieves' in a way that one can only marvel at," summarized the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .
