Pablo Berger (* 1963 in Bilbao , Spain ) is a Spanish screenwriter , film director and film producer who initially made video clips and worked in advertising.

Life

Berger attended elementary and high school in Artxanda Trueba at the gates of Bilbao. Under the guidance of advertising people Álex de la Iglesia and Ramon Barea , he directed his first short film Mamá in 1988 . A scholarship from the provincial government of the Vizcaya enabled him to take a master's degree in film at New York University in Manhattan . After receiving his doctorate , he worked as a professor of management at the New York Film Academy .

In the following years, Berger worked as a producer of video clips and music. In 2003 he made his film Torremolinos 73 with Javier Cámara , Fernando Tejero and Candela Peña.

Berger's black-and-white film Blancanieves , published in 2012 , for which he both wrote and directed the script, won awards in Spain and internationally in the years that followed. The main actress was Maribel Verdú . On October 5, 2015, the film was broadcast on the Franco-German TV channel arte .

Berger produced the commercial for the 2013 Spanish Christmas lottery against the backdrop of the town of Pedraza with singers such as Montserrat Caballé , Raphael , David Bustamante , Marta Sánchez and Niña Pastori , who sang to the melody Always on My Mind .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
