Goya / Best Director
Winner and nominee for the Spanish Goya Film Award in the Best Director category ( Mejor dirección , formerly Mejor director ) since it was first awarded in 1987. The award is given to the best filmmakers of domestic film productions (including Spanish co-productions) of the previous year.
Victories by female filmmakers remained exceptions , similar to the French Césars . After the Spanish artist Pilar Miró won the directing award in 1997 with her historical comedy El perro del hortelano , her compatriots Icíar Bollaín ( Open My Eyes ) and Isabel Coixet ( The Secret Life of Words ) followed her in 2004 and 2006 .
