occupation

Salvador - Fight for Freedom is a Spanish fiction film from 2006 by Manuel Huerga with Daniel Brühl , Tristán Ulloa , Leonardo Sbaraglia , Leonor Watling , Ingrid Rubio and Joaquín Hinojosa in the leading roles.

The film is based on the book Cuentra atrás. La historia de Salvador Puig Antich by Francesco Escribano , who describes the last execution of a prisoner by the Garrote : Salvador Puig Antich .

The film won the Goya film award for best adapted screenplay ( Lluis Arcazaro ).

action

In the last year of the Franco dictatorship, the MIL ( Movimiento Ibérico de Liberación ), an anarchist group , embarked on a series of robberies in order to finance their opposition activities against the dictatorship. Salvador Puig Antich is one of the idealistic young members of the group. The police don't take the group seriously at first, but eventually try to arrest them.

A police operation to arrest the still active members of the group ends in a wild shooting that results in the death of a young police officer and the arrest of the MIL members. Salvador Puig Antich, who also sustained gunshot wounds, is accused of killing the policeman. In a trial before the military tribunal, he was sentenced to death on the basis of numerous irregularities - such as the disappearance of evidence - due to the recent murder of the dictatorship's leading figure, Admiral Carrero Blanco . In an effort to demonstrate force, the regime sentenced Salvador to death by the Garrote .

criticism

kino.de calls the film an “oppressive history lesson in an elementary coming to terms with the past” and states: “The relaxed tone that was initially struck with the 1968 rebel romanticism soon turned into a bitter accusation.”

background

The film took in 2006 under the title Una mirada cierta at the Film Festival in Cannes in part. On September 15, 2006, the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España selected Salvador together with other films as the Spanish contribution to the Oscar .

Dispute over historical accuracy

Both the film and its literary source have been heavily criticized by former MIL members and Salvador’s MIL companions, who confirm that the political dimension of the characters in Puig Antich is reduced to a minimum, as well as the image of their prison guard, the military court and the Brigada Político-Social of Franco politics is falsely glorified.
