action

A red-brown, desert-like region in Spain. Ángel drives along a lonely country road, suddenly a lamb stands in front of him on the road. He brakes and meets a group of shepherds with the lamb on his shoulder. A shepherd and four lambs were struck by lightning. Ángel speaks to the dead shepherd, who briefly comes to life again, and the viewer realizes that in this film, reality is not always real. Is Ángel an angel, or is his doppelganger, whose voice you can hear over and over again and who appears as a person more and more often in the course of the film, the angel? Perhaps Ángel is just schizophrenic, because a former nurse who now works as a police officer knows him from a psychiatric institution to which Ángel was admitted because of his “blooming imagination”.

Ángel falls in love with the wine grower Ángela, who is married, and also with a young girl named Mari, who says she only has sex with many men, but has never been in love.

With the shepherds he hires as workers, Ángel begins his job as a pest controller, for which he was sent to this area by his uncle. A roll louse spoils the wine and ensures that it tastes "earthy". Even if the protagonists have nothing against this taste, this woodlice must be exterminated. The wine should sell well in the market. One day when he suspects the shepherds of stealing his money for their wages, they refuse to continue working for him.

Between Patricio, Ángela's husband, who is also one of Mari's lovers, and Ángel there is a fight for the women. During a wild boar hunt, Ángel shoots Patricio, who is only slightly wounded. Patricio is now trying to drive Ángel out of the area by all means. Days later, Patricio is found in his tractor, struck by lightning.

Ángel spends one night with Mari, the next morning is in the shower with Ángela and is injured by a stone on the head of the shepherds who worked for him during a discussion (he has found the money and wants to apologize).

Mari visits him in the hospital and the two go to the sea. His doppelganger, the angel, stays with Ángela.

Reviews

“Exciting, breathtaking in places, always romantic. In doing so, the director proves that cinema can still be smart even where it gets cheesy ... "

“Although Tierra is far from staging perfection in places, there are moments for which even veteran directors would kill: Of course, this includes some of the most erotic, intense and convincing love scenes that have been seen for a long time, but also those almost at La regle du jeu ( the rules of the game ) reminiscent of a wild boar hunt, the seemingly surreal view of the roll louse or the fumigation of the vineyard, which would have done a science fiction film credit. "This is exactly what makes the magic of Medem's films, that he looks at the earth like a distant star, whose natural laws seem to obey only the rules of the heart."
