action

The film, which is told alternately from the perspective of the two protagonists, begins with a scene when Otto got caught with his parachute in a tree after a plane crash. He has memories of how he met Anna, his stepsister and secret love.

Otto and Ana get to know each other as school children in Madrid in 1980. He falls in love with her at first sight, but she needs some time to discover her feelings for Otto. When Ana's mother, Olga, and Otto's father, Álvaro, move in together and marry, the two become step-siblings. During this time the two discover their sexuality and begin a relationship that they hide from their parents. Both project a deeper existence into the other. Otto sees Ana as the replacement for his birth mother Ula and Ana Otto as the reincarnation of her father, who died shortly before. When Otto's mother committed suicide, he too tried to commit suicide. As a result, his relationship with Ana breaks up.

After the failed suicide attempt, Otto leaves his family and moves to Finland to begin pilot training. He follows the example of the German bomber pilot Otto Midelmann, whose life was saved by his grandfather and who was named after Otto. He passes the pilot's exam and flies as a courier between Spain and Lapland . Some time later Ana follows him and becomes a teacher in Finland, but the two do not meet. There she meets the German pilot who owns a log cabin on the Arctic Circle. Otto and Ana have made contact and want to meet in this hut. He flies there and parachutes as the plane crashes on the ground. He gets caught in a tree and misses Ana, who is heading for the next town. There she is so absorbed in a newspaper in which she reads an article about the crashed plane and assumes that Otto died while running in front of a bus. At this moment she has a vision of meeting Otto again and he actually runs to her and sees himself reflected in her eyes at the end of the film.

background

Julio Médem not only directed The Lovers of the Arctic Circle , but also wrote the book. Médem also processed his own experiences with love as an adolescent and the relationship with his father. The individual chapters from the perspective of one of the main characters are characteristic elements of the film. The film was shot in Madrid, Lapland, Lohja and Helsinki .

criticism

“A dazzling film, conceived as an emotional puzzle, which, due to the different perspectives of the two protagonists, takes on an ambivalent ambiguity. Carried by brittle poetry, it celebrates love and chance and, despite its fairy-tale form, always avoids folkloric platitudes. "
