The Spanish Film Prize Goya was awarded in 2006 in 28 categories as well as an honorary Goya. The award ceremony on January 29 was dominated by the drama The Secret Life of Words by Spanish director and screenwriter Isabel Coixet . The international starring film ( Sarah Polley , Tim Robbins and Julie Christie ) is about a nurse who cares for a burn victim on an oil rig. The production, which was with five nominations as an outsider, put that in the category Best Film among others against the favored dramas Obaba (ten nominations, a Goya) of Montxo Armendáriz and Princesas (nine nominations, three trophies) by Fernando Leon de Aranoa by .

The Secret Life of Words won in the important categories of Director, Original Screenplay and Best Producer, with a woman receiving the award for Best Director for the third time in the Goyas' 20-year history. Only Pilar Miró ( 1996 ) and Icíar Bollaín ( 2003 ) had achieved this before . Woody Allen's thriller Match Point was awarded as the best European film . The film was given preference over Fernando Meirelles ' Der Ewige Gärtner and the German contribution Der Untergang by Oliver Hirschbiegel . The Argentine war drama Iluminados por el fuego by Tristán Bauer won in the category Best Foreign Film in Spanish , while the Honorary Goya went to the 79-year-old Spanish scriptwriter and producer Pedro Masó .
