action

It is about the life of two prostitutes in the Spanish capital Madrid . On the one hand there is the Spanish Caye, which has been "in business" for a long time. She is just under thirty and makes her way through life with a cheeky pony hairstyle and idiosyncratic charm. She knows her business well and is saving up for a breast operation , which she hopes will attract more clients and, ultimately, a higher income. She hides her job as a whore from her family, especially her mother. On the other hand is Zulema, an illegal immigrant from Santo Domingo who is stranded in Spain in search of a better life. She left her little son in her mother's care in her home country, but she saves every penny in order to be able to bring him to Spain one day and offer him a better life.

The two women get to know each other when Caye is late for a meeting with a suitor in a café and Zulema snatches him from under her nose. Despite this incident, they both become friends. A friendship that Caye has to keep a secret from her colleagues at the regular meetings in a hairdressing salon. They see the illegally immigrated whores as a threat, as they dispute their suitors.

In front of a bar, Caye gets to know the young IT specialist Manuel, from whom she hides her job, becomes friends with him and projects the secret desire for love onto him. At the same time, Zulema is regularly haunted by Funcionario, an employee of public authorities, who promises her legal papers and demands sex in return. Zulema not only complies with this request, but is also brutally raped by him every time. Despite the mandatory hospital stays, she continues to believe that she will get the papers she hoped for from him. Caye tries to keep her friend away from these meetings, but fails.

Meanwhile, Caye is invited to a café where she wants to meet a group of suitors. On the spot it turns out that Manuel belongs to this group, and he finds out the truth about their profession. This ends the story of the two.

After Zulema finds out about an unspecified illness, she has sex with her tormentor one last time and travels back to her home country. Caye gives her the money saved for the breast surgery beforehand. When she visits her mother, she leaves her cell phone open on the table. Although she only takes calls from suitors on this phone, she asks her mother to answer the call for them after one ring, with the exit open.

criticism

“The precisely observing, intensely staged and convincingly staged film tells, with semi-documentary means, of street prostitutes in the Spanish capital as well as of daily racism. He does not ask about social roots and occasionally puts too much emphasis on entertainment. "
