Antonio Durán (born August 19, 1924 in Arbúcies , † January 11, 2009 in Åkersberga ) was a Spanish - Swedish football player and coach. Having won four Swedish championship titles and three runners-up championships, he is considered the most successful coach of Malmö FF .

Career

Durán grew up in Catalonia before moving to Tenerife with his family when he was ten . Here he began playing football before making his professional debut for CD Córdoba . In 1948 he joined Atlético Madrid in the Primera División , where he first came into contact with Swedish football thanks to his teammate Henry Carlsson and whose Swedish nanny Ulla he married. He later played for Real Oviedo . With the club he joined the Primera División between 1952 and 1954. He then ended his active career as a 29-year-old.

In 1955 Durán went to Sweden with his wife and took over the coaching position at Wifsta / Östrands IF in the third-class division 3 Södra Norrland . In 1957 he was hired by Sandvikens IF . With the club he occupied in the 1957/58 season, which was extended due to the change in the rhythm of the game and the 1958 World Cup , two points ahead of relegated IFK Eskilstuna, the last non-relegation place and led him to seventh place in the table the following year. He then took over the third division side Åtvidabergs FF , which he led in the 1960 season in the second division 2 Östra Götaland . After he had occupied a place in the lower midfield with the team in the first year, she missed a promotion place in 1962 as third in the table only thanks to the poor goal difference compared to the rivals IFK Kristianstad and Landskrona BoIS tied for points . By reaching the runner-up behind Östers IF in the 1963 season, he made a name for himself in a higher class.

Durán familiarized himself with the 4-2-4 system played at the 1962 World Cup by the Brazilian national team that had won the title . With this system, he replaced the 2-3-5 system previously used in Sweden at his next coaching station, the Allsvenskan-Klub Malmö FF . As a result, he designed one of the most successful periods in the club's history. With the team around players like Ingvar Svahn , Prawitz Öberg , Krister Kristensson , Bo Larsson , Staffan Tapper and Roland Andersson , he won the Von Rosens Cup four times for the Swedish national championship until 1971 . He also won the Svenska Cup in 1967 with Malmö FF .

In 1972 Durán left the club in the direction of Djurgårdens IF . At the Stockholm club he could not build on the successes of his time in Skåne , the third place in the table in the 1973 season was the best result.

In 1975 Durán suffered a cerebral haemorrhage . Therefore, he withdrew from the football business.
