Roland Andersson (born March 28, 1950 in Malmö ) is a former Swedish football player and current coach . The defender won several titles as a player in Sweden and ran for the Swedish national team .

Career

Player career

Andersson played at Kävlinge GIF in his youth . In 1968 he moved to Malmö FF . With the club he was three times Swedish national champion and twice won the Svenska Cup . In January 1975 he moved to league rivals Djurgårdens IF , for which he was active for two seasons. In 1977 he returned to MFF and became a master again. In addition, the trophy was won twice and the final of the 1978/79 European Cup was reached. In 1983 he ended his active career.

Andersson has been called up to the Swedish national team 19 times . He was part of the national team at the 1978 World Cup .

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his career, Andersson became a youth coach at MFF. In 1985 he moved to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia , which he was in charge of until 1987. From 1988 to 1990 he was the coach of Lunds BK . In 1991 he returned to Malmö FF as an assistant coach. In 1993 he took over the Al-Ittihad again before becoming an assistant at MFF again.

In 1995 Andersson went abroad and looked after the Qatar Sports Club . He then went to Switzerland to join BSC Young Boys . In 1998 he returned to Sweden and became head coach at Malmö FF. After a break between 1999 and 2002, he returned to the Arab region and took care of Al-Shaab from the United Arab Emirates . Previously, in the summer of 2002, he had supported Sven-Göran Eriksson , the coach of the English national team , as a match observer at the 2002 World Cup .

Following the 2004 European Championships , Andersson became Lars Lagerbäck's assistant coach for the Swedish national team after Tommy Söderberg stopped being his partner. The selection he supervised qualified for the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship . Due to his work, he was in the meantime under discussion as Eriksson's assistant coach at Manchester City . After failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup , he and Lagerbäck resigned from office in October 2009.

In February 2010 Andersson followed Lagerbäck as assistant coach when he took over the supervision of the Nigerian national team .
