Pilar Miró Romero (* 20th April 1940 in Madrid ; † 19th October 1997 ibid ) was a Spanish screenwriter and director .

biography

Pilar Miró came from a military family. She initially decided to study law and journalism, but graduated from a film school, the Escuela Oficial de Cine , where she also taught for a short time. From 1960 she worked for the state television company TVE , initially in the editorial assistant and production management, later also as a screenwriter and director.

It had its first major success in 1979 with the film The Crime of Cuenca, which was staged based on an authentic case . Pilar Miró, who had been a member of the Spanish Socialist Party since 1976 , was accused of insulting the Guardia Civil because of this film , in particular because of the very drastic depictions of torture. As a result, she had to answer for her film in a military court. The film therefore only found its way into Spanish cinemas in 1981, although it should be noted that The Crime of Cuenca had already participated in the Berlinale as a competition film the year before .

The socialist head of government Felipe González brought her to the Ministry of Culture in 1982 and appointed her state commissioner for film and cinema. Between 1986 and 1989 she was director of the Spanish state television broadcaster TVE.

In 1992 she won the Silver Bear for her film Beltenebros for outstanding artistic achievements at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival . With her film El Pájaro de la Felicidad she took part in the 46th Cannes International Film Festival in 1993 within the section " Un Certain Regard ". In 1995 she was a member of the jury at the 45th Berlin International Film Festival . She is best known when she directed the television broadcasts of the weddings of the daughters of King Juan Carlos I , Elena of Spain and Cristina of Spain in 1995 and 1997 .

Pilar Miró, who suffered from heart problems and had already undergone heart surgery in 1982, died of a heart attack. The proximity to the broadcast of the wedding celebrations attracted special attention and sympathy in the Spanish media and public. She left behind a son, Gonzalo Miró , who was sixteen at the time of her death, from a relationship with journalist José Luis Balbín .
