The Goya Spanish Film Award was presented on February 1, 2003 for the 17th time. Fernando León de Aranoas won eight nominations in five of the 28 categories on Mondays in the Sun. The drama, which won four awards at the San Sebastián International Film Festival the previous year and was awarded Best Film , tells of unemployed shipyard workers. León de Aranoa had already received the Goya for Barrio and Familia . Further nominations in the category Best Film went to Pedro Almodóvar for Speak to Her , Emilio Martínez Lázaro for Bedside Stories and Antonio Hernández for Beyond Memory . Almodóvar's film, which has already won several international awards for his previous works and received two nominations for Speak to Her at the 2003 Academy Awards , is about a nurse who is in love with a comatose ballet dancer. Almodóvar's contribution was only awarded a Goya for the best film music in seven nominations.

Javier Bardem was named Best Actor for his portrayal of Santa on Mondays in the Sun , while Mercedes Sampietro won the Best Actress category for Lugares comunes . Luis Tosar in Mondays in the Sun and the American Geraldine Chaplin in Beyond Memory were able to prevail in the supporting actor categories . Roman Polański's world war drama The Pianist was awarded for Best European Film. Diego Arsuaga's tragic comedy El ultimo tren - The Last Train , which tells the hijacked locomotive of a group of elderly Uruguayans (played by Héctor Alterio, among others ), won in the category Best Foreign Film in Spanish. The honorary Goya went to the Spanish actor Manuel Alexandre , who has been active in Spanish film since the 1940s and became known, among other things, with the Oscar-nominated Placido .
