Anna Anni

Anna Anni (born November 21, 1926 in Marradi ; † January 1, 2011 in Florence ) was an Italian costume designer . She worked for film, television, theater and ballet .

Life

Anna Anni studied art at the Istituto d'Arte in Florence . First she wanted to be a painter, painted ceramics, toys and fabrics. Then she turned to the theater. She made her debut as a costume designer in 1953 when she outfitted the actors in the comedies Volpone by Ben Jonson and La locandiera by Carlo Goldoni . Orson Welles directed both cases .

In 1956 Anni worked for the first time with director Franco Zeffirelli on the costume design for the opera Turandot by Giacomo Puccini . They remained professionally and on friendly terms until Annis died. From 1966 to 1989 Anni was a costume designer at the Florentine opera house Teatro Comunale di Firenze , starting with the performance of Verdi's Luisa Miller . She worked with directors such as Mauro Bolognini , Raymond Rouleau (1904–1981) and Sandro Sequi .

From the 1980s on, Anni took on the costumes for Zeffirelli's opera films such as Cavalleria rusticana , Pagliacci , Otello and Don Carlo . In 1987, Anni and costume designer Maurizio Millenotti (* 1946) received an Oscar nomination for the costume design by Otello . For the film Giselle - Dancers (1987) by Herbert Ross , she designed the costumes for the ballet scenes. This was later followed by feature films such as Tee with Mussolini (1999) and Callas Forever (2002), which Zeffirelli also directed. They also worked together on numerous opera performances in the Verona Arena . Here Anni designed costumes for Carmen (1995–2010) and Aida (2002–2010).

In 1995 Anni worked as a costume designer for the production of Carmen for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and two years later for the production of Aida at the National Theater in Tokyo .

Anni worked with director Beppe Menegatti and his wife Carla Fracci on performances of more than 20 ballets . This included pieces such as Coppélia , Giselle , Il fiore di pietra and Hommages romantiques . Anni also designed costumes for operas directed by Menegatti, such as L'equivoco stravagante by Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini's La sonnambula .

Anni was known for attaching great importance to details and historical authenticity when designing costumes. Well-known opera singers such as Maria Callas , Montserrat Caballé and Luciano Pavarotti wore their costumes. Her works were exhibited in 2006 in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna of the Palazzo Pitti . In 2011 a commemorative exhibition with drawings and costumes took place in the Teatro Comunale di Firenze , for which Anni worked for many years.

Anni died in Florence at the age of 84.
