Marradi ( Maré in the Romagna dialect ) is an Italian commune in the Tuscany region with 3,014 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The village has a medieval center.

Location of Marradi in the metropolitan city of Florence

The community extends over about 154 km². Marradi is located around 90 km northeast of Florence on the Lamone on the northern edge of the metropolitan city of Florence and the Mugello on the border with Emilia-Romagna in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, 2267 GG.

The districts (Frazioni) include Campigno (616  meters altitude , approx. 15 inhabitants), Crespino del Limone (535 meters altitude, approx. 90 inhabitants), Lutirano (386 meters altitude, approx. 40 inhabitants), Popolano (276 meters altitude, approx. 270 Inhabitants) and Sant'Adriano (260 meters in altitude, approx. 190 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Borgo San Lorenzo , Brisighella ( RA ), Dicomano , Modigliana ( FC ), Palazzuolo sul Senio , Portico e San Benedetto (FC), San Godenzo , Tredozio (FC) and Vicchio .

history

The place was first inhabited by the Ligurians , Etruscans and Romans , who gave the place its first city fortifications and called Castellum Marrato . Around the year 1000 the place belonged to the Papal States . Shortly thereafter, the Counts Guidi di Modigliana took over the rule of the place, which with the exception of 1258 to 1260, when Florence first took over the place, but had to cede it again to the Guidi after the battle of Montaperti , until 1312 held. Until 1428 the place belonged to the Manfredi from Faenza , then Florence took over the place again. The place was first mentioned in writing on October 6, 1025 in a document from the Counts Guidi, which they sent to the Badia di Santa Reparata .

From 1885 to 1932 Marradi was the home of the poet Dino Campana . In the summer of 1944, 42 residents of Marradi were murdered as hostages by German soldiers in the course of the German retreat.

The center of the village is the Piazza delle Scalelle, which was built in memory of the fight against Corrado Lando (1358).

The 14th century Palazzo Comunale is located on the square. The coat of arms of the Torriani family is on the facade . You can also find here z. B. the Palace of Credito Romagnolo and the Palazzo Fabbroni.

About 2 km to the east is the Badia del Borgo or Badia di Santa Reparata . This monastery has been documented since 1025. In 1090 the Vallombrosans took over this monastery until the 19th century.

There are numerous other religious buildings:

  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Nascente , mentioned in 1097 and owned by the Vallombrosans since 1112.
  • Chiesa di San Ruffillo , already mentioned in 1022.
  • Eremo di Gamogna , also called Eremo di San Pier Damiani , founded in 1053 by Petrus Damiani .
  • Chiesa di San Lorenzo : Originally this church was founded by the Romans. The current building comes from the major reconstruction from 1785.

  • The place is on the Florence-Faenza railway line. Marradi has three stops, first the districts of Crespino del Lamone and Biforco , then the Marradi-Palazzuolo sul Senio stop near the center .
  • Marradi is on the state road Strada statale 302 Brisighellese Ravennate , which connects Florence with Russi near Ravenna .
