Montelupo Fiorentino (mostly just Montelupo) is an Italian municipality with 14,341 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Florence in the Tuscany region .
geography
The municipality is located around 25 km west of the provincial and regional capital Florence at the confluence of the Pesa and the Arno .
The districts include Ambrogiana, Botinaccio, Camaioni, Citerna, Erta, Fibbiana, La Torre, Pulica, Samminiatello, Sammontana, San Quirico and Turbone.
The neighboring municipalities are Capraia e Limite , Carmignano ( PO ), Empoli , Lastra a Signa and Montespertoli .
history
There are traces of settlement in the area from the Paleolithic and Etruscan times . The place is mentioned in the Tabula Peutingeriana under the name Mansio ad Arnum . At the beginning of the 13th century the place was conquered and destroyed by Florence. However, as Florence recognized the strategic importance of this area, it immediately began to rebuild the castle. In 1336 the municipality built the city walls and in 1416 received the statute of Podesteria. Montelupo has been known for ceramic production since the 15th century .
