history

Palazzo Pretorio in Certaldo Alto
Certaldo Town Hall in Piazza Boccaccio in Certaldo Basso

The origins of the place go back to the Etruscan era, but the place itself was first mentioned in 1164, when Friedrich Barbarossa gave the places Certaldo, Pogni and Semifonte (today Barberino Val d'Elsa ) to Count Alberti from Prato . Certaldo is also mentioned in Dante's 16th Canto of the Inferno. Above all, the place is known as the possible place of birth and death of Giovanni Boccaccio , who was also buried here. The Praetorian Palace was the royal castle loyal Count Alberti, who kept her possession when she 1184 the Guelph submitted Florence. In 1292 Florence took over the direct rule in Certaldo, the Palazzo Pretorio became the seat of the governor, in 1415 the seat of the Vicariate of the Elsa and Pesa (Val di Pesa). The coats of arms still visible today on the outer facade and in the entrance hall are family coats of arms of various vicars. Due to the Via Francigena running below the historic city center and its trade flows, the place enlarged in the 17th century, the lower part of the town was given the name Certaldo Basso . In 1784 the place lost the vicariate, the Palazzo dei Vicari (Palazzo Pretorio) was then used as the town hall until 1866, when the town hall was relocated to Certaldo Basso on Piazza Boccaccio. The Empoli - Siena railway line, built in 1849, with a stop in Certaldo Basso, brought further economic upswing, which was reinforced by tobacco and wheat cultivation since the 19th century. Tourism has been another important branch of the economy since the 1980s.

Certaldo city gates

All three city gates, Porta al Sole , Porta al Rivellino and Porto Alberti , have been preserved from the city fortifications and, like the city wall, date from the 14th century. The Porta al Sole was the medieval main gate and bears the coat of arms of the Medici , the city lords at the time the fortifications were built. The name Gate to the Sun comes from its south-facing location. Like the Porta Rivellino, it is connected to the Via Francigena via the Costa Vecchia road to the south-west, later the more modern Via del Castello was built parallel to it. The city gate Porta Alberti was the southeastern entrance to the Francigena and was reached from it via the Costa Alberti road. The cable car station that leads to Certaldo Basso is located at Porta Alberti.
