The Elsa is a 63 km long river in the Tuscany region of Italy, which crosses the Elsa Valley (Italian: Valdelsa) from south to north and flows into the Arno at Empoli .

course

The river has its source in the Montagnola Senese range of hills near the municipality of Sovicille , province of Siena , approx. 10 km southwest of Siena.

The first part, roughly between Casole d'Elsa (6 km in the local area) and Colle di Val d'Elsa (7 km in the local area), is generally called the dead Elsa (L'Elsa Morta), as it has no tributaries and is not itself from rainwater and inflows from thermal baths (Caldane). After Gracciano d'Elsa (district of Colle di Val d'Elsa, located south of it) the river is then called the living Elsa (L'Elsa Viva). Then it passes Poggibonsi (11 km in the local area), where the Staggia enters from the right , and shortly after it leaves the province of Siena in the direction of the province of Florence. Here it touches the western districts of Barberino Val d'Elsa (4 km in the local area) and then reaches Certaldo (6 km in the local area) and Castelfiorentino (11 km in the local area), where the Lama River flows into it. In the western municipality of Empoli (7 km in the local area), in the district of Marcignana, near the border with the municipality of San Miniato , the Elsa flows into the Arno.
