geography

The Senese mountain range begins a few kilometers northwest of Siena and includes the municipalities of Casole d'Elsa , Monteriggioni , Siena and Sovicille . The highest point is the Montemaggio (Monteriggioni) mountain with an altitude of 671 meters . The mountain range lies on the Via Francigena as the last obstacle (coming from the north) before Siena. In the southwest it borders on the Colline Metallifere .

The marble quarried in the Montagnola Senese was used in several buildings in Siena, such as the Cathedral of Siena , the Cappella di Piazza in the Piazza del Campo and the Fonte Gaia by Jacopo della Quercia (originally in the Piazza del Campo, now in the Fienile of the Museum of Santa Maria della Scala ).

Rivers

In the Montagnola Senese area, the river Elsa rises near Sovicille , which then flows north and flows into the Arno . The area is also touched by the Merse , Rosia and Serpenna rivers , all of which are part of the Ombrone river system .
