course

The Rosia rises near the Poggio Cetinone (412 m), one of the southernmost foothills of the Montagnola Senese mountain range , in the southeastern municipality of Casole d'Elsa and flows in a southeastern direction. Since it is not regulated in the upper reaches, it is known as Torrente Rosia. He spends a total of 4 km in the municipality of Casole d'Elsa and 3 km in that of Chiusdino . He spends the longest stretch in Sovicille (15 km), mostly running as a border river to Casole d'Elsa or Chiusdino. In the western municipality of Sovicille, the Rosia initially runs below the Castello di Montarrenti and then passes the medieval bridge Ponte della Pia just before the district of Rosia (205 m) in the municipality of Sovicille. After the place Rosia it flows through the western part of the Pian de Rosia with the districts Torri and Stigliano (both Sovicille) and flows into the Merse at Molino del Palazzaccio east of Orgia (Sovicille) .

The Rosia serves in the lower part together with the Serpenna to stabilize the water level of the Rosia plain (Pian de Rosia). It was regulated by means of small barriers under the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo in the second half of the seventeenth century. The river is part of the Riserva Naturale Alto Merse nature reserve .
