Sovicille is an Italian commune with 10,013 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Siena in the Tuscany region .

Location of Sovicille in the province of Siena

Sovicille is located approx. 10 km southwest of the provincial capital Siena and approx. 50 km south of the regional capital Florence . The municipality is located in the Montagnola Senese range of hills in the Mersetal (Val di Merse), where the Elsa and Rosia rivers have their source . Sovicille is in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1 797 GG.

The districts include Ancaiano , Brenna , Orgia , Rosia , San Rocco a Pilli , Tegoia , Torri and Volte Basse . Other places (località) are Ampugnano , Barontoli , Cerreto Selva , Malignano , Ponte allo Spino , Recenza , San Giusto , Simignano , Stigliano , Toiano and Tonni .

The neighboring municipalities are Casole d'Elsa , Chiusdino , Monteriggioni , Monteroni d'Arbia , Monticiano , Murlo and Siena .

history

For the first time the place was on April 23, 1123 by Alexander III. mentioned under the name Sufficille . The name probably comes from the Latin sub (under) and ficinulae / ficus (fig tree ). In 1260 the place was occupied by Florence , but after their defeat in the Battle of Montaperti in the same year, the place Siena fell. The community was founded with its own statutes as early as the 13th century. In 1333, Sovicille was attacked by Pisa and burned to the ground.

The Siena airport is located in the municipal district of Sovicille, in (unofficial) Ampugnano area (between Sovicille and San Rocco a Pilli on the main road 73 Senese Aretina (SS 73)). In addition, the eastern municipality is located on Strada Statale 223 di Paganico .
