Thebaïs ( ancient Greek Θηβαϊς Thebaïs ) was the name given to the area around the city of Thebes in Egypt in ancient times . This is where the Thebaic hermits settled in the rocky desert near the city in early Christian times , who were named after the area as well as pictures showing the life of the hermits .

After the territorial reform of Egypt under the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 297, Thebaïs was one of the four Egyptian provinces alongside Aegyptus and Lybia . The Thebais was later divided into the provinces Thebais Superior and Thebais Inferior . In the late 4th century it became part of the Dioecesis Aegypti .
