Cohors II Thebaeorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cohors II Thebaeorum ( German  2nd cohort from Thebais ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by military diplomas and inscriptions.

Name components

  • Thebaeorum : from Thebais . The soldiers of the cohort were recruited from the Thebais, the area around the city of Thebes , when the unit was set up . The Cohors I and II Thebaeorum were the only auxiliary units that were set up in the territory of the province of Aegyptus .

Since there is no evidence of the additions milliaria (1000 men) and equitata (partially mounted), it can be assumed that it is a pure infantry cohort, a Cohors (quingenaria) peditata . The nominal strength of the unit was 480 men, consisting of 6 Centuries with 80 men each.

history

The first evidence of unity in the province of Aegyptus is based on a military diploma dated to the year 83 AD. In the diploma, the cohort is listed as part of the troops (see Roman Forces in Aegyptus ) that were stationed in the province. Further diplomas, dated 105, 157/161, 179 and 206, prove unity in the same province.

Locations

The cohort in Aegyptus was probably stationed in the Fayyum Basin (possibly in Philadelphia ).
