Lieutenant Dubow wants to get rid of his dog Milka and has identified his friend, the volunteer Knaps, as a potential buyer. The allegedly thoroughbred English setter is said to cost only two hundred rubles . Because Knaps throws in a "but", the lieutenant has no time to hunt and Milka will probably die without a job, Dubow wants to surrender his famous hunting dog for a hundred and then for fifty. Knaps criticizes the dog's female gender. The lieutenant argues. The animal is a male . Dubow bought a round of cognac, added milk to the female sex, crossed out the advantages of bitches and lowered the price to twenty-five. Knaps admits he has no kopeck in his pocket. Nevertheless, the lieutenant and his friend eat a portion of scrambled eggs from the pan. After the tasty meal, Dubow wants to give Milka to Knaps as a present. The volunteer is reluctant; says he doesn't need a dog. Suddenly Dubow gets in a bad mood and scolds Milka for a disgusting mutt, a mixture of farm dog and pig. Wachramejew, the lieutenant's boy, is supposed to take Milka to the skinner tomorrow .
