List of Roman auxiliary units
The following auxiliary units are documented within the Roman army for the imperial period and late antiquity ; but they did not all exist at the same time. The list is not complete.

Additions to names

- armillata : awarded with Armilla .
- cR or civium Romanorum : the / from Roman citizens or with Roman citizenship. The soldiers of the unit had been granted Roman citizenship at one point in time. However, this did not apply to soldiers who were accepted into the unit after this point in time. They received Roman citizenship only with their honorable farewell ( Honesta missio ) after 25 years of service.
- eq or equitata : partially mounted, d. H. the unit was a mixed association of infantry and cavalry.
- felix : the lucky one

- pf or pia fidelis : the pious and faithful
- quingenaria : 500 men. A Cohors (quingenaria) (peditata) had a nominal strength of 480 men, a Cohors (quingenaria) equitata a nominal strength of 600 men.

- Flavia : reference to the Flavian emperors Vespasian , Titus or Domitian .
- Nervia or Nervana : reference to Nerva

Remarks
- ↑ Paul Holder assumed that the Cohors Aelia Expedita and the Cohors I Aelia Singularium received their Aelia suffix from Antoninus Pius, probably in connection with the uprising in Mauritania. Peter Weiß , Michael P. Speidel no longer see any need for this, as the Cohors I Aurelia Classica and the Cohors II Aurelia Classica by Antoninus Pius were given the addition of Aurelia . - ↑ A unit with the name Ala Antoniniana is evidenced by the inscription ( CIL 9, 2213 ). It is controversial whether this was an independent unit or a unit that was firmly assigned to the Legio II Italica . Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, pp. 243-244.
- ↑ The existence of a unit with the name Ala Hispanorum Tironum is assumed based on the (incomplete) inscription ( CIL 6, 41050 ). Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, p. 21.
- ↑ The existence of a unit with the name Ala Hispanorum Veterana is assumed based on the (incomplete) inscription ( CIL 6, 41050 ). Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, p. 21.
- ↑ A unit with the name Ala I Lemavorum is evidenced by the inscription ( CIL 2, 2103 ). According to John Spaul , it is likely to be a short-lived unit. Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, p. 249.
- ↑ The existence of a unit with the name Ala I Osrhoenorum sagittaria is suspected on the basis of a brick with the stamp SOTALA , which was found in Brigetio. Literature: Ovidiu Țentea , Ex Oriente, p. 34.
- ↑ The reading of the inscription ( AE 1966, 286 ) is controversial. Ovidiu Țentea and other historians assign the inscription to an Ala I Septimia Syrorum , while John Spaul assigns it to an Ala II Septimia Syrorum . Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, pp. 211-214, Ovidiu Țentea , Ex Oriente, pp. 34-35.
- ↑ John Spaul assigns the inscriptions ( AE 1931, 36 , AE 1966, 286 ) to an Ala II Septimia Syrorum . Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, pp. 211-214
- ↑ The existence of a unit with the name Ala Treverorum is presumed based on the (incomplete) inscription ( AE 1968, 321 ) and literary sources. Tacitus mentions an Ala Treverorum in his Annales (Book III, Chapter 42) and Historiae (Book II, Chapters 14 and 28, Book IV, Chapter 18). Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, pp. 252-253.
- ↑ A unit with the name Ala II Ulpia Afrorum is documented by the Notitia dignitatum , Orientis XXVIII for the province of Aegyptus . Despite the name, it may be a late antique new formation. Literature: John Spaul , Ala2, p. 243.

Cohorts
The auxiliary groups were mostly divided into cohorts ; the command of an auxiliary cohort was usually held by a prefect . In a cohort made up of Roman citizens and a Cohors milliaria , the commander was usually a tribune . The nominal strength was either 480 ( Cohors quingenaria peditata ), 600 ( Cohors quingenaria equitata ), 800 ( Cohors milliaria peditata ) or 1040 ( Cohors milliaria equitata ) men.
