The Numerus Ursariensium ( German  Numerus Ursariensium ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by an inscription and a brick stamp.

Name components

  • Ursariensium : The addition probably refers to an (unknown) location of the unit.

history

The origins of the number are not known; possibly it originated from a vexillatio Ursariensium . The unit was stationed in the province of Germania Inferior in the 3rd century AD . It is documented for the first time by bricks with the stamp N URS , which were found in Germania inferior near Gelduba and Quadriburgium and which are dated to the second half of the 3rd century.

In the 4th century the unit was probably stationed in Gaul. At least this is indicated by the tombstone ( CIL 13, 3492 ) that was found near Amiens . The Auxilia Ursarensia and Milites Ursarienses mentioned in the Notitia dignitatum are unlikely to have any relation to the Numerus Ursariensium .
