Ala Pansiana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ala Pansiana or Ala Pansia ( German  Ala des Pansa ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by an inscription.

Name components

  • Pansiana or Pansia : des Pansa. The unit was probably set up by C. Vibius Pansa and named after him. C. Vibius Pansa was between 15 BC. And in 12 AD the provincial governor in Raetia .

Since there is no reference to the addition of milliaria (1000 men) to the name , the unit was an Ala quingenaria . The nominal strength of the Ala was 480 men, consisting of 16 towers with 30 riders each.

history

The tombstone of Acutus was found in Oescus ; therefore the unit was probably stationed in the province of Moesia . The Ala was probably set up in Germania or Raetia . Since there is no evidence of its later existence, it was either destroyed in the first half of the 1st century or merged with another unit.
