Cohors VII Delmatarum
The Cohors VII Delmatarum [equitata] ( German 7th cohort of the Delmater [partially mounted] ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is documented by inscriptions.
Name components
- Delmatarum : the Delmater . The soldiers of the cohort were recruited from the Illyrian tribe of the Delmater on the territory of the Roman province of Dalmatia when the unit was set up .
- equitata : partially mounted. The unit was a mixed association of infantry and cavalry. The addition does not appear in the inscriptions; Liccaius was but a rider and Licaus served in the Turma of Annius .
Since there is no evidence of the addition of milliaria (1000 men) to the name , the unit was a Cohors (quingenaria) equitata . The nominal strength of the cohort was 600 men (480 infantry and 120 horsemen), consisting of 6 centuries of infantry with 80 men each and 4 tower cavalry with 30 horsemen each.
history
Little is known about the unit. It was probably stationed in the 1st century AD like the Cohors VI Delmatarum in Caesarea Mauretaniae , the capital of the province of Mauretania Caesariensis .
Locations
Locations of the cohort in Mauretania Caesariensis were possibly:
- Caesarea Mauretaniae (Cherchell): The tombstones of Licaus and Liccaius were found in Cherchell.
