Michael P. Speidel

Michael Paul Speidel (born May 25, 1937 in Pforzheim ) is an American ancient historian of German origin.

Speidel studied Ancient History at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . He then went to the United States as a lecturer in Ancient History. At the University of Hawaii at Mānoa he received a permanent position in 1970 as an associate professor . He was later appointed full professor .

His main research interests include Roman military history, especially during the late republic and the imperial era . He wrote most of his writings in English.

The ancient historian Michael Alexander Speidel is his nephew.
