Michael Alexander Speidel

Michael Alexander Speidel (born June 5, 1963 in Göppingen ) is a Swiss ancient historian .

Speidel studied ancient history , epigraphy , papyrology , Egyptology and general history at the universities of Zurich , Heidelberg and Oxford . In 1990 he received his doctorate from the University of Zurich with the Egyptological dissertation The Hairdressers of the Egyptian Old Empire . In 1994 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bern . He taught at the Universities of Lausanne , Bern and Cologne . In 2002 he was awarded an SNSF professorship. He was a board member of the Working Group on the Roman Provincial Study of Switzerland , a member of the advisory board of the Orbis Provinciarum series and is currently a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Ancient Military History and the Revue des Etudes Militaires Anciennes and other academic series. He represented Christian Marek as Professor of Ancient History at the University of Zurich in the fall semester of 2012 and the spring semester of 2013 . He runs the private institute for ancient military history MAVORS in Basel. His uncle is the ancient historian Michael P. Speidel .
