The stone cross near Frauenaurach is a historic stone cross in the Erlangen district of Frauenaurach . The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists it under monument number D-5-62-000-873.

Location

The stone cross is located on the embankment of the Willi-Grasser-Straße 10 property, south of the historic center of Frauenaurach. The side path, which ends shortly before the Federal Motorway 3 today , was the road from Frauenaurach to Kriegenbrunn until it was built in the late 1950s .

description

Back of the stone cross, 2012

The strikingly massive sandstone cross is around 170 cm high, a maximum of 106 cm wide and 34 cm deep. The shaft widens down from 35 to 70 cm. The left arm is rounded , presumably due to weathering . On the front, traced with black paint, the fragments of an inscription can be seen:

"Here rests [?]
In God
my dear
women
[...]
LH"

However, it is not clear for all traced letters whether their interpretation was correctly reproduced by the color or whether it was even fictitious. A description from the 1940s only mentions strong depressions, although it was not possible to determine “whether they were characters or weathering.” The letters “HH” visible on the left side of the trunk were also not mentioned in the old description and are probably more recent.

history

According to a legend , two peasant women got into an argument here and prepared themselves with a sickle in such a way that they died. This narration would match the inscription. Since neither can be proven by any other sources, the meaning of the probably late medieval stone cross is ultimately unclear.

According to another legend, the stone cross originally stood further to the left in a clay pit . A farmer from Frauenaurach brought it to his farm to make a cattle trough out of it. When he then had a lot of misfortune and fell ill, he attributed this to the relocation of the stone cross and had it put up again at its current location.
