The military diploma of June 13, 80 AD ( CIL 16, 26 )

The Cohors II Asturum et Callaecorum [equitata] ( German  2nd cohort of Asturians and Callaecers [partly mounted] ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is documented by military diplomas and brick stamps.

Name components

  • Asturum et Callaecorum : [the] Asturians and Callaecers . The soldiers of the cohort were recruited during installation of the unit of the peoples of the Asturians and Callaecer on the territory of today's Asturias and Galicia.
  • equitata : partially mounted. The unit was a mixed association of infantry and cavalry. The addition does not appear explicitly in any of the military diplomas, but 2 military diplomas were issued for riders in the cohort.

Since there is no evidence of the addition of milliaria (1000 men) to the name , the unit was a Cohors equitata . The nominal strength of the cohort was 600 men (480 infantry and 120 horsemen), consisting of 6 centuries of infantry with 80 men each and 4 tower cavalry with 30 horsemen each.

history

The first evidence of unity in the province of Pannonia is based on a military diploma dated to 80 AD. In the diploma, the cohort is listed as part of the troops (see Roman Forces in Pannonia ) that were stationed in Pannonia. Further military diplomas, dated 85, 110, 135, 143, 141/144, 145, 148, 151/160, 157, 159 and 167, prove the unit in Pannonia (or from 110 in the province of Pannonia inferior ).

Locations

Locations of the cohort in Pannonia or Pannonia inferior were possibly:

  • Ad Militare ( Batina ): Brick finds with the stamp COH II AST indicate the presence (of parts) of the cohort in Ad Militare or the surrounding area ( CIL 3, 10674 ). John Spaul referred to Barnabás Lőrincz for the order of the camps in which the unit was stationed.
  • Ad Statuas : See in the article the section Troop and the literature given there.
  • Lugio ( Dunaszekcső ): The unit may have been stationed in Lugio together with the Cohors VII Breucorum .
  • Surduk : Brick finds indicate the presence (of parts) of the cohort in Surduk or the surrounding area.

Uncertainties

Military diploma of August 7th, 143

The military diploma of August 7, 143, on which Unit II Ast (urum) is listed, is assigned to different cohorts: John Spaul assigns it to the Cohors II Asturum et Callaecorum , Jörg Scheuerbrandt to the Cohors II Asturum .

Military diplomas from October 9th 148

The military diplomas of October 9, 148, on which the unit II Nerv (iorum) and Callaec (orum) is listed, are assigned to different cohorts: John Spaul and Margaret M. Roxan assign the diplomas of the Cohors II Asturum et Callaecorum because they assume an error in the preparation of the diplomas, while Jörg Scheuerbrandt assigns them to the Cohors II Nerviorum et Callaecorum .
