Diana Veteranorum
Coordinates: 35 ° 46 ′ 46 " N , 6 ° 4 ′ 31" E
Diana Veteranorum (now Aïn Zana ) was an ancient Roman city in Numidia in what is now Algeria , Batna province , which was about 40 km (as the crow flies) north-northwest of Lambaesis . Today it is an excursion destination, as some ruins of the city can still be seen.
The city emerged as part of the veteran settlements in North Africa under Emperor Trajan (98-117), here an older Numidian community was combined with the veteran settlement. It was elevated to the status of a municipality during the governorship of Decimus Fonteius Frontinianus around 161 or 162 AD . The legate Gaius Maesius Picatianus had an arch of honor for Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus erected in Diana Veteranorum in 164/5 AD .
An early Christian basilica dates from the late antique period, the foundations of which were excavated from 1850. The only recorded bishop is a Fidentius (411). The titular diocese of Diana follows on from this.
