Cohors I Flavia Afrorum
The Cohors I Flavia Afrorum ( German 1st cohort, the Flavian of the (North) Africans ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by military diplomas and an inscription.
Name components
- Flavia : the Flavian. The honorary designation refers to the Flavian emperors Vespasian , Titus and Domitian .
- Afrorum : the (North) African. The soldiers of the cohort were recruited on the territory of the Roman province of Africa when the unit was established .
Since there are no references to the additions milliaria (1000 men) and equitata (partially mounted), it can be assumed that it is a pure infantry cohort ( Cohors peditata ). The nominal strength of the unit was 480 men, consisting of 6 Centuries with 80 men each.

The first evidence of unity in the province of Africa is based on military degrees dated 127. In the diplomas, the cohort is listed as part of the troops (see Roman Forces in Africa ) that were stationed in the province.

Members of the cohort
A member of the cohort, Iulius Pullus , a soldier, is known by the inscription ( AE 1995, 1662 ).
