The Cohors VIII Breucorum ( German  8th cohort of the Breuker ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is documented by inscriptions.

Name components

Since there is no evidence of the additions to the name milliaria (1000 men) and equitata (partially mounted), it can be assumed that it is a pure infantry cohort ( Cohors peditata ). The nominal strength of the unit was 480 men, consisting of 6 Centuries with 80 men each.

history

The cohort is not listed on any of the military diplomas for Germania inferior . The honorary designation pia fidelis Domitiana , with which Domitian (81-96) distinguished the Roman forces in Germania inferior that remained loyal to him after the suppression of the uprising of Lucius Antonius Saturninus , was also not awarded to her. John Spaul therefore suspects that the unit was dissolved before the middle of the first century.
