Lucius Antonius Saturninus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucius Antonius Saturninus († 89) was a Roman politician at the end of the 1st century AD, who rose in vain against Emperor Domitian .

Life

Saturninus was accepted into the rank of senator by Vespasian . He was consul in 82 and later became governor of the province of Germania superior .

In Mogontiacum he was proclaimed emperor by his troops, the Legio XIIII Gemina and the Legio XXI Rapax , in January 89 . In the late antique Epitome de Caesaribus it is claimed that Domitian insulted him as a homosexual and that Saturninus therefore rose up against him. But the uprising was put down after just 42 days by the troops of the governor of the province of Germania inferior , Aulus Bucius Lappius Maximus , even before Domitian had moved north with strong associations, including the Praetorians . Allegedly, Saturninus, who lost his life, wanted to come to the aid of Germanic tribes , but they could not cross the thawed Rhine . Maximus burned Saturninus' letters to prevent others from being drawn into them. Domitian had the suppression of the revolt followed by the executions of most of the officers. Saturninus' head was exhibited at the Forum in Rome.

The troop units that remained loyal to Domitian were given the honorable nickname pia fidelis . Domitian also decreed that two legions could no longer be accommodated in the same camp . Jan Kees Haalebos, Professor of Provincial Roman Archeology in Nijmegen who died in 2001, assumes that the legionary camp in Nijmegen was expanded and the wooden buildings were replaced by stone ones because of this uprising .
