Gerold Walser

Gerold Walser (born May 25, 1917 in Zurich ; † July 3, 2000 in Basel ) was a Swiss ancient historian and epigraphist .

Gerold Walser, son of the Romance studies professor Ernst Walser, studied ancient history and classical philology in Basel and Lausanne from 1936. In 1946 he received his doctorate in Basel with a thesis on Rome, the Empire and the foreign peoples in the historiography of the early imperial era with Harald Fuchs . He then taught at the University of Freiburg . After his habilitation in 1952 with Herbert Nesselhauf , Walser followed a call to Bern in 1953 , where he worked until 1978. After his retirement he went back to Freiburg and took on a teaching position there again in 1991. In 1997 he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his services to the University of Freiburg and for his scientific achievements .

In addition to the historiography of Caesar and Tacitus, his main research interests included the systematic exploration of Roman roads and milestones , the history of the Alpine region and the history of the Hittites and Iranians . From 1950 until his death, Walser and the ancient historian Karl Friedrich Stroheker published the international journal Historia .

Walser's private library was bequeathed to the Department of Ancient History at the University of Freiburg. The archaeological collection of the University of Freiburg acquired two original antique portrait heads from his previous possession.
