Heinz E. Herzig

Heinz E. Herzig (born July 4, 1936 ) is a Swiss ancient historian .

Heinz E. Herzig received his doctorate in 1968 and has been a lecturer at the University of Bern since 1972 . In 1978 he completed his habilitation , two years later he was appointed to the chair of ancient history in Bern as the successor to his teacher Gerold Walser . In 2001 Herzig retired, his successor for a short time was Bruno Bleckmann , then Stefan Rebenich .

Together with his teacher Walser, Herzig stood for almost 50 years of continuity on the Bernese Ordinariate of Ancient History. The focus of his research is historical geography , especially old road research . Herzig was one of the managers of the inventory of historical traffic routes in Switzerland (IVS) . One of his focal points here was the exploration of the Roman roads in what is now Switzerland.
