Megaro Athinogenous

The Megaro Athinogenous ( Greek Μέγαρο Αθηνογένους , English Athinogenis Mansion ) is an imposing city palace of the Athenian bourgeoisie from the time of George I. It is located at Stadion-Str. 50 in the center of Athens , two houses away from the Old Royal Printing House (Παλαιό Βασιλικό Τυπογραφείο).

history

It belongs to the Athinogenous family, an old Athenian family with whom Stephanos Skouloudis was related. The latter was married to Maria Athinogeni. His heirs were his nephews Ioannis and Stephanos Athinogenous. The palace was built in the years 1875-1880 according to plans by the French architect Piat, with the support of Professor Kostas Biris (Κώστας Μπίρης). Piat had come to Athens in 1869 to work with his compatriot, the entrepreneur Chollet , who was asked for advice in 1870 on the construction of the Corinth Canal , a job that could not be carried out at the time. Piat stayed in Greece and worked in Athens until the end of the 19th century, designing numerous villas. These include the Megaro Skouloudi , which was demolished in the 1930s, and the Megali Bretania , which is now the hotel "King George", and the Megaro Vourou (demolished in the 1960s), where the historic Sacharatou kafenion was located for many years and the Athens Plaza Hotel , built at the same time in 1873. It housed the first Ottoman bank in Greece at the end of the 19th century . Today the listed Megaro Athinogenous is half derelict and burned out after a fire in May 2004 .

layout

It is a two-story palace with a bel étage, the ground floor was temporarily rented out as business premises. Its stylistic execution is unusual. In an era of strict Athenian classicism , which was at most loosened up with Renaissance forms, the palace was built in the classicist baroque style typical of France.
