Karl Strobel

Karl Strobel (born December 21, 1954 in Augsburg ) is a German ancient historian .

Karl Strobel studied history, ancient history, classical philology, German studies, archeology, philosophy and education in Munich from 1974 to 1978 . In 1977 he became a member of the Corps Bavaria Munich , of which he has not been a member since 2011.

His doctorate on the subject of investigations into the Dacer Wars Trajan took place in 1981 in Munich with Hermann Bengtson . From 1979 to 1986 Strobel was Werner Huss's research assistant and academic advisor at the University of Bamberg . In 1989 he completed his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg on the subject of Das Imperium Romanum in the “3. Century " . The work was published in 1993 and caused a sensation in the subject because Strobel presented a fundamental reassessment of the so-called imperial crisis of the 3rd century . From 1990 to 1992 he was head of the Numismatic Department at Heidelberg University. From 1993 to 1996 he held a Heisenberg research position at the University of Würzburg . In 1993/1994 he was a visiting member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey . From 1997 to 1998 Strobel was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Trier ; since 1998 he has been teaching ancient history and antiquity at the University of Klagenfurt . His numerous research areas include epigraphy , numismatics , papyrology , ancient economic history, the history of Hellenism, the history of the Roman Empire and the history of the Roman army. Strobel published a biography of Trajan in 2010 .

On February 9th, 2009 it was announced in an OTS broadcast by the Austria Press Agency that Strobel would become an independent group of people: "We for LH Gerhard Dörfler . LH Gerhard Dörfler for Carinthia!" heard in the context of the state elections in Carinthia 2009 . Dörfler supported the initiative as a candidate for whom " Jörg Haider's legacy is in the best of hands". In the summer of 2012, Strobel applied unsuccessfully for the post of Rector of the University of Klagenfurt.
