Cohors II Maurorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cohors II Maurorum ( German  2nd cohort of the Moors ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by an inscription.

Name components

  • II : The Roman number stands for the ordinal number, the second ( Latin secunda ). Hence the name of this military unit is pronounced as Cohors secunda ...
  • Maurorum : the Moors . The soldiers of the cohort were recruited from the Moors when the unit was established.

Since there are no references to the additions to the name milliaria (1000 men) and equitata (partially mounted), it can be assumed that it is a Cohors quingenaria peditata , a pure infantry cohort. The nominal strength of the unit was 480 men, consisting of 6 Centuries with 80 men each.

history

The cohort was presumably stationed in Numidia Province . The only evidence of unity is based on an inscription dated August 1, 208 AD.

Locations

Cohort locations in Numidia may have been:

  • Casae (El Madher): an inscription was found here.

Members of the cohort

A member of the unit, G (aius) Iulius Paulinus , a centurion , is known by an inscription. On August 1, 208, he was in command of 126 men who were seconded to a vexillatio .
