The dedicatory inscription of Valerius Nigrinus (RIB 2140)

The Ala I Tungrorum ( German  1. Ala of the Tungerer ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by military diplomas and inscriptions.

Name components

  • Tungrorum : the Tungerer . The soldiers of the Ala were recruited from the Germanic tribe of the Tungerer when the unit was established.

Since there is no reference to the addition of milliaria (1000 men) to the name , the unit was an Ala quingenaria . The nominal strength of the Ala was 480 men, consisting of 16 towers with 30 riders each.

history

The Ala was stationed in the province of Britannia . It is listed on military diplomas for the years AD 98-158.

The unit may have been part of the troops that began to conquer Britain around 43 under the leadership of Aulus Plautius . The first evidence in Britannia is based on a military diploma dated 98. The diploma lists the Ala as part of the troops (see Roman Forces in Britannia ) that were stationed in the province. Further diplomas, dated between 105 and 158, prove unity in the same province.

Remarks

  1. a b The scenario given here assumes two different units: the Ala I Tungrorum , which was stationed in Britain, and a second unit, the Ala I Tungrorum Frontoniana , which was stationed in the provinces of Pannonia and Dacia Porolissensis . John Spaul , who was not yet familiar with the military diploma of 158, assumes that the Ala I Tungrorum was merged with the Ala Frontoniana to form the Ala I Tungrorum Frontoniana around 130 .
  2. It is not certain whether the unit was listed on the (incomplete) diplomas from 124 and 135. John Spaul only assumes this for the diploma of 124, Paul Holder , however, considers it possible for both diplomas. For the problem of I Ast (urum) et Tun (grorum) on the diploma of 135 see Ala I Asturum et Tungrorum .
