Ala Exploratorum Pomariensium

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ala Exploratorum Pomariensium [Gordiana] [Severiana] ( German  Ala of the scouts in Pomaria [the Gordian] [the Severian] ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is documented by inscriptions.

Name components

  • Exploratorum : the scout or scout.
  • Gordiana : the Gordian. The addition appears in the inscription ( CIL 8, 9907 ).
  • Severiana : the Severian. The addition appears in the inscription ( CIL 8, 9906 ).

Since there is no reference to the addition of milliaria (1000 men) to the name , the unit was an Ala quingenaria . The nominal strength of the Ala was 480 men, consisting of 16 towers with 30 riders each.

history

Possibly the unit was originally a numerus that was locally recruited in the province of Mauretania Caesariensis and was later upgraded to an Ala. The unit was stationed in Mauretania Caesariensis for probably the entire duration of its existence .

The last evidence of the Ala is based on the inscription ( CIL 8, 9745 ), which is dated to 242 AD.
