Cohors I Ausetanorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cohors I Ausetanorum ( German  1st cohort of the Ausetans ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by an inscription.

Name components

  • Ausetanorum : [the] Ausetan . The soldiers of the cohort were when installing the unit out of the tribe of the Ausetaner in the field of conventus Tarraconensis (with its capital Tarraco recruited).

Since there are no references to the additions milliaria (1000 men) and equitata (partly mounted), it can be assumed that it is a pure infantry cohort, a Cohors (quingenaria) peditata . The nominal strength of the unit was 480 men, consisting of 6 Centuries with 80 men each.

history

The unity is evidenced by a single inscription. It is not possible to assign the cohort to a province.

Members of the cohort

A commander of the cohort, L (ucius) Vibius Tuscus Aurelius Rufinus , a prefect , is known by the inscription ( CIL 2, 1181 ).
