Iulius Indus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iulius Indus was a Gallic nobleman from the Treveri tribe .

His family had Roman citizenship granted by Julius Caesar .

During the uprising of the Treveri and Haedu in AD 21, he sided with the Romans and became a direct adversary of Iulius Florus . During the uprising he led a cavalry unit of Treverian warriors loyal to Rome. After the end of the uprising, the cavalry unit remained and was set up as a regular ala . It took on the name of its first commandant and was listed as Ala Gallorum Indiana . It is believed that the Indus still led the ala when they conquered Britain in 43 AD .

His daughter Iulia Pacata was the wife of Gaius Iulius Alpinus Classicianus , who was also from Gaul .
