Gaetuler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaetuler was the Roman name of the nomadic peoples who inhabited the Sahara south of the Atlas Mountains and the Roman province of Mauritania and west of the Garamanten to the coast . They are considered the ancestors of today's Tuareg . Since the conquest of Numidia by the Romans, part of the Gaetulians also recognized their rule. The southernmost Gaetulers, mixed with black Africans, were called Melanogaetulers ("black Gaetulers").
