Name components

  • Halicanensium : The addition refers to the ancient name of the location of the unit, the Kleiner Feldberg fort . It appears in the inscription ( CIL 13, 7495 ) in the abbreviated form Halic and was also added to Halicensis or Halicinensium .
  • Alexandriana : the Alexandrian. An honorary title that refers to Severus Alexander (222-235). The addition appears in the inscription ( CIL 13, 7495 ).

history

The Exploratio was stationed in Germania superior . It is first documented by the inscription ( CIL 13, 7495 ) that was found in the Feldberg fort and that is dated to 222/235 AD. Since the Feldberg Fort was probably built shortly after the middle of the 2nd century, the unit is likely to have arisen from an older vexillatio Halicanensium .

Members of the unit

Another four inscriptions ( CIL 13, 7494 ) that were dedicated to the genius of centurions were found in the camp area . Based on their location, they are assigned to exploration . Three of them were donated by a favorinus ; possibly he was a member of the unit.
